March 21 - 25
New York City

Toby and I fly to the NYC and visit with Martha and Steve. While in NYC we had some great meals, took in a show, and did some new-to-us touristy attractions. We flew an American Airlines red eye flight, Wednesday night from SFO directly to JFK. We checked into the Dream hotel on 55th Ave/Broadway early that Thursdsay morning. After breakfast at AppleJacks we strollled to Time Square and then we met up with Martha in the apartment and then headed bacl to Times Square to board the Greyline bus for the Downtown Loop tour. Our annoying tour guide explained the various sites and the bus headed downtown. The cold air was getting to us so we disembarked at South Street Seaport for some clam chowder. We boarded the bus back up to Central Park where we strolled through bare trees and snow covered lawns. That evening we met up with Steve and had dinner at Milos. At Milos we saw Rhea Perlman and Danny Devito seating at the table next to us.

On Friday, we met up with Martha again and we took a taxi down to Battery park to board the Circleline ferry to Liberty Island and the Statue of Liberty. While on the island it started to rain. We didn't even get off to visit Ellis Island. After the educational tour of Lady Liberty we strolled up to ground zero, the former site of the World Trade Center. Then we walked up Church on our way to Mulberry Street or Little Italy. We had a late lunch at Paesano of Mulberry. We then took the Q Subway back up to 57th Street. We rested for a little bit before heading to Martha and Steve's for some wine and crackers before the show. We walked to the Shubert theater for the 8pm showing of Monte Python's "Spamalot", it was a hilarious production... which had me in tears. After the show got out at 10pm we headed back up to Midtown for a late dinner at Nobu 57.

On Saturday, Toby and I spent the day together, on this sunny morning we walked over to Rockefeller Center and went up to the "Top of the Rock" observation deck on the 67-70th floors. We had great views of the Empire State Building and Central Park from this vantage point. Afterwards we explored St. Patrick's Cathedral which was in middle of mass. We then spent an hour inside the Museum of Modern Art before heading up 5th Ave to Central Park for a hotdog lunch. We walked thru the park and ended up at Lincoln Center before heading back to the hotel. That night we met up with Steve and Martha for the last time for an Italian meal at la Vineria on 55th. Later that night Toby and I headed down to a bustling Time Square.

On Sunday, we did a quick walk down to Grand Central Station and to the New York Public Library and Bryan Park before heading back up for lunch at Applejacks (where we had breakfast on our first day). We then picked up our bags at the hotel and headed to JFK. While at the airport we had a 5 hour delay! URGH. We were originally scheduled to be home by 7pm... we arrived at 11:15, then waited an hour for our luggage.

Oh well, other than the flight home, it was a great fun filled trip.

It started to rain on us after touring the museum.

Toby and Alan with Lady Liberty as seen from the ferry.

The original torch is now housed inside the museum.

It poured on us while up at the observation level on the pedestal, plus weird angles of the statue (up her skirt?)

After the Liberty tour we walk to the World Trade Center.

We then walk to Little Italy and have a late lunch at Paesano's of Mulberry Street.

It was a nice relaxing late lunch at Paesano's while out of the rainy weather.

After lunch we hop on the Q line from Canal Street up to 57th Street.

We get dressed up and meet at Martha's for drinks and cheese/crackers before we head to the play.

We see "Spamalot" at the Schubert Theater.
