July 22 - 24

Lake Tahoe: Squaw Valley

We head up to Tahoe for a fun summer weekend on the north shore of the Lake. We stay two nights at the Squaw Valley Lodge in Olympic Village.

Day 1 - Friday, July 22 - Drive up to Tahoe after work

After a full day of work we head home, pack up our belonging and put our bikes on the car and the hit the road. We hit a lot of traffic on the East Bay but once we past Berkeley the roads were wide open all the way up to Tahoe. We stopped at a terrible McDonald's in Vallejo for a quick dinner. We arrived in Tahoe around 10pm. Once at the Squaw Valley Lodge they upgraded our one bedroom to a 'deluxe' second story room.

Day 2 - Saturday, July 23 - Brockway Lookout, Secret Cove, Truckee River

Saturday morning was bright and sunny and the beginning of a perfect day. While out on the balcony I noticed that our room was underneath the tram. After we packed up our belongings for the day we hit the road and headed toward Kings Beach and to Brockway Fire Lookout above the Cal Neva hotel along the stateline. The road didn't head all the way to the top, we had to hike the last leg toward the very top. The lookout afforded spectacular views of the north shore of the lake on a crystal clear day. Incline Village and Kings Beach were visable from this vantage point.

After Brockway Lookout we hit the road past Incline Village and Sand Beach toward our favorite beach area in Lake Tahoe, Secret Beach in Hidden Cove just south of Sand Beach. Once we hiked down to the cove area we noticed the very small beach was packed, so we hiked north and found a small secluded cove to relax. We spent a few hours basking in the sun among the rocks in this cove. We have our lunch here as well.

Around 3pm we head back to our condo where we prepare our bikes for a ride along the Truckee River. We head out directly from our condo down toward the river and ride all the way up to Tahoe City. Once in Tahoe City we relax by the dam before heading back on our bikes back toward Squaw Valley. The ride back along the river was easy but the ride up the incline toward our condo was difficult for me, my legs were burning.

Back at the condo Toby makes a wonderful stir fry chicken dinner. Whew! What a day! We were both spent!

Day 3 - Sunday, July 24 - Truckee River, High Camp at Squaw Valley

Sunday morning we hit our bikes for a quick ride down toward a the Truckee River. The morning light along the river was magnificent. After the short bike ride we head back to the condo to pack and check out.

We then take the tram up to Highcamp up above Squaw Valley where we spent a good portion of the day. Once at the top we take in the views of Lake Tahoe and the snow capped peaks while we have our lunch. We then hike up the hill as far as we could before the snow halted our uphill progress. After relaxing at Highcamp we take the tram back down the hill. Our car was alread loaded and ready to go. We head to Truckee to fill up with gas before heading back home. We encounter some heavy traffic before Sacramento and just before 80, it takes us over 5 hours to get home. We learned not to leave during this 'high' time.

We had a wonderful trip to Tahoe and the weather was ideal.
