January 8

Pigeon Point and Año Nuevo

On another bright, clear and warm January weekend we head out to the coast south toward Pescadero's Pigeon Point State Historical Park and Año Nuevo State Preserve. These unusal clear January days provided hazy free viewing everywhere and it was exceptional along th coast. We drove over 92 toward Half Moon Bay and then south on Highway 1 toward the lighthouse. Once at Pigeon Point we strolled the grounds and viewed the numerous exhibits and took tons of photos. The actual lighthouse has been closed over 10 years and slowly getting repaired. The huge lens has been removed and is now displayed in an exhibit room.

After Pigeon Point we drove a little further south to Año Nuevo State Preserve famed for their elephant seal population. We had no plans on taking a tour to see the elephant seals so we hiked the coastal trails and took in the views. We then strolled along the beach back to the visitor's center where we encountered a solo bull elephant seal sleeping on the beach. This was our first encounter with the huge sea creature. We didn't expect to see an elephant seal unless we took the guided tour so we were lucky to get a close view. Numerous people were keeping their distance will observing the resting beast.

After Año Nuevo we planned on having a late lunch at Duarte's in Pescadero but the lines were too long, we ended up having sandwiches at San Benito Inn in Half Moon Bay. A nice end to a lovely day.
